Sylvia Downs is a chartered occupational psychologist and fellow of the British Psychological Society. She has been visiting professor at City University Business School in London, Queen's University in Belfast and the Open College, Wellington New Zealand. She has published in the United Kingdom, Australia, the United States and South Africa where she has worked for many years. Her consultancy work was mainly with I.C.I., Shell and Smith Kline Beecham where her research was utilised in making change happen by involving the workforce in learning how they could contribute to change. As a researcher she worked on government schemes for the long term unemployed and young people. Her research in industry was always practical and occurred in such areas as training London bus drivers and underground guards and selecting for the shipbuilding, construction, clothing and electronic industries as well as dentistry students and helicopter observers for the Royal Navy.
